Etymology[edit]

Compound of (i, being in a place, sitting in a place, the 連用形 (ren'yōkei, continuative or stem form) of verb 居る iru “to be (for animate subjects)”) +‎ (saka, sake, liquor, alcoholic beverage) +‎ (ya, house, store, building). The saka changes to zaka as an instance of rendaku (連濁).
