Din engleza veche sċeort, scort ("scurt") < proto-germanică *skurtaz, *skurdaz. Provine din proto-indo-europeană *(s)k(ʷ)Art-, *(s)k(ʷ)Ard-. Înrudit cu germana veche de sus scurz, vechea limbă norvegiană skorta (daneză skorte, "a lipsi"), latină curtus ("scurtat, incomplet").
